At the annual checkup
What to expect at a teen checkup
Regular preventive visits give teens and families time to discuss growth, physical health, emotional wellbeing, safety, and the transition toward managing health more independently.
Your provider may review
- Growth, puberty, medical history, medicines, and a physical exam
- Sleep, nutrition, physical activity, school, and screen habits
- Mood, stress, relationships, safety, and other age-appropriate concerns
- Recommended immunizations and any school, camp, or sports needs
- Questions from both the teen and the parent or caregiver
Before the visit
- A parent or guardian should accompany patients under 18; an authorized adult may attend when arranged in writing
- Complete requested pre-visit screening; adolescents age 12 and older should answer their own screening questions
- Bring a photo ID, insurance card, medicine list, and relevant records or forms
- Allow extra time if screening or paperwork still needs to be completed
- Write down questions so both the teen and caregiver have time to ask them
Care for the whole teen
Care for physical and emotional health
Teen care looks beyond a single symptom. Visits support physical health, emotional wellbeing, healthy routines, and the skills young people need to participate in their own care.

Preventive checkups
Annual exams, growth and puberty, immunizations, and school or sports needs.

Mental & emotional health
Screening and support for stress, mood, anxiety, attention, and changes at home or school.

Everyday wellbeing
Guidance for sleep, nutrition, physical activity, screen use, and daily routines.

Safety & healthy choices
Age-appropriate conversations about relationships, substances, injury prevention, and personal safety.
Privacy during teen visits
Private time helps teens speak openly
Most adolescent checkups begin with the teen and parent or caregiver together. Part of the visit may include one-on-one time so the teen can ask questions and take a more active role in their health.
Privacy is important, but it is not absolute. The provider will explain what can remain private and when a safety concern requires involving a parent, caregiver, or another responsible adult.
For parents and caregivers
- A parent or guardian should be present when a visit begins for patients under 18
- The provider may ask to speak with your teen alone for part of an adolescent checkup
- Providers encourage teens to share important health information with parents or trusted adults
- You can ask how privacy, records, and portal access work before sensitive topics are discussed
For teens
- You can ask questions about your body, mood, relationships, safety, or any health concern
- Your provider will explain privacy and its safety limits in clear language
- You can ask for help talking with a parent, caregiver, or another trusted adult
